Leading Urban Planner, Chuck Marohn to Speak in Elkhart County, March 19 & 20

February 8, 2024

Learn from the founder of Strong Towns, as he brings his wealth of experience in urban planning and civil engineering to Elkhart County to discuss managing growth and prosperity.

Leading urban planner Chuck Marohn will spend two days in Elkhart County in March as the first speaker in the Building Blocks Talks series.

Several organizations are coming together to bring speakers to the community to offer wisdom and counsel on urban planning, civic design, and community vibrancy.

The Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Community Foundation of Elkhart County, Connect in Elkhart County, and weIMPACT are collaborating to plan events, starting with a visit by Marohn on March 19 and 20.

"When it comes to understanding how cities grow and thrive, Chuck Marohn is in a class all his own. We're excited for Chuck's visit to Elkhart County so he can share his groundbreaking ideas and help us think through the best ways to manage the growth and prosperity we are enjoying in our cities," said Jon Hunsberger, executive director of the Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Marohn is the founder and president of Strong Towns. He is a land use planner and civil engineer with decades of experience. He has authored two books with a third one being released soon and is the host of the “Strong Towns” podcast.

He will speak publicly for a free event in the Crystal Ballroom of the Lerner Theatre in Elkhart starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 19. His interactive presentation will offer a time for questions from the audience.

During his time in Elkhart County, he will also tour the downtowns of Nappanee, Goshen, and Elkhart. He will meet with community leaders in several sessions.

“Most of us want similar outcomes in our community, particularly high-functioning neighborhoods,” said Dave Weaver, founder of weIMPACT Group. “We want great education systems, top-notch local retail, comfortable and professional work environments, housing that suits many, and cultural and civic buildings that instill pride of place. Are our actions leading to these outcomes? Elkhart County has all the necessary attributes to be a vibrant and aspirational community to invest in, educate in, and thrive.”

Marohn is just the first of a number of speakers being planned. “We are eager to bring in incredible resources like Chuck Marohn of Strong Towns, to help educate us and share best practices to ensure our community is more loveable, liveable, and sustainable now and for future generations,” said Weaver.
